ToW 16: The Boys on the Boat Part 2

The Boys on the Boat ends with an exciting final boat race, and the team that the book follows wins. However, while this may be the focus of the book, the second half of the book also looks at Hitler's role in the Olympic games. How he commanded the creation of the building of the Olympic Village, and how he covered up the cruel treatment of those unfortunate enough to suffer through the holocaust.

The book doesn't end after the big race, however. It also covers how the racing team from poor families fade to nearly nothing after their brief moment in the spotlight, but how they still lead lives that were better than where they had come from.

ToW 15- Bernie Sanders & Hillary Clinton

This very simply cartoon by political cartoonist Stephen Paul Breen depicts a wrench entitled 'Bernie' with Bernie Sander's head on it being thrown into a gear system labeled 'Clinton Machine,' a joke using the phrase 'Threw a wrench into their plan.' This stems from Bernie Sander's recent increase in popularity, surpassing Hillary Clinton in some areas in the polls, and continues to rise.

Stephen Paul Breen creates cartoons for a few different cartoons, but many of his appear in the San Diego Union-Tribune, a print often accused of being conservative. However, this cartoon avoids bias, and does so by keeping the message very simply- that Bernie might be a threat to the Clinton campaign despite his relatively humble start in the presidential campaign.

ToW 14: Silently protesting Muslim woman ejected from Trump rally

This article by CNN, a news outlet known to have liberal bias, reports on the recent events at a Donald Trump rally, where a Muslim women, Rome Hamid, was escorted out, due to her being Muslim. The article takes the side of the women, criticizing the people who boo'd and shouted obscenities such as 'You have a bomb, you have a bomb!'

The article is complementary to a TV report, and assumes that the readers know what the subject is, so it starts out by commenting on stars 'reminiscent of those worn by Jews during the Holocaust,'
which helps to bring perspective to how absurd the situation is. The article also quotes Trump, where he said, "'There is hatred against us that is unbelievable,' Trump said. 'It's their hatred, it's not our hatred." This further pushes the article's purpose, to oppose Donald Trump. It also brings to light the massive social equality issue that Trump has brought to the table with his radical views.

However, the article was not all doom and gloom, as the article also reported on how Hamid found many of the people very kind and supporting, and how many of them even shook her and and apologized for what was happening to her.

The article fulfills its purpose of reporting the incident, as well as succeeding at painting trump and his radical followers as, well, radical, while also showing that many people are still kind and open towards others.
